Molecular Art

Absolutely incredible watercolors by David S. Goodsell of biomolecular structures within the body.

There are bunches more at his page (with legends and explanations), but here’s

an entire Mycoplasma mycoides cell. The cell shown here is about 250 nanometers in diameter, which is at the small end of the range of observed sizes.

As in my other work, I have tried to include all of the macromolecules at reasonable locations and concentrations, and with the actual shapes and sizes. Small molecules like sugars, ATP and water are not shown.

Boolean Buddhas

“If you meet the buddha on the road, combine, merge and extrude him.”

Awesome 3D printed buddha sculpture by David Hirmes.

I started to combine multiple copies of the Buddha model with simple shapes, using boolean operations. A “boolean operation” can take an object and add (“union”), subtract (“difference”), or intersect with another object.

After the model is finished, it gets printed on the Makerbot. The Makerbot builds the model one thin layer at a time by extruding melted plastic.

Music Video for Dan Deaconʼs True Thrush

Co-Directed by Dan Deacon and Ben O’Brien.

For the video, Dan and Ben filmed a simple 13-second scene. That scene was then shown to the next team. After seeing the video that team had 1 hour to recreate it — characters, props, set, costumes, and actions — as close to exactly as possible from only their memory.
