Dibs on being Relativistic Navigator!

The calculations carried out by Kezerashvili and Vazquez-Poritz show that the effects of general relativity could push a solar sail off course by as much as a million kilometres by the time it reaches the Oort Cloud and even tiny relativistic forces such as frame dragging can cause a deflection of one thousand kilometres.

If it works as well as it looks like it will, we’re that much closer to a number of revolutionary technologies. Not the least of which are highly efficient solar cells.

Buckywires ought to be handy for all kinds of biological, electrical, optical and magnetic applications. The gist of the paper is that anything that traditional carbon nanotubes can do, buckywires can do better. Or at least more cheaply.

"Burning walls" may stop black hole formation

This has got to be one of the more terrifying sounding natural phenomena ever conceived.

In subhadronic form, space is essentially empty. So the phase change creates a sudden reduction in pressure allowing any ordinary matter in the star to implode into this new vacuum. The result is a massive increase in temperature of this matter to 100 MeV or so, creating, what Royzen calls, a “burning wall” within the supernova.

Also may explain the dearth of black holes relative to what we predict there should be.

I can’t wait to see the footage this thing generates.

Fang and co conclude with the dramatic prediction that these superlenses should make it possible to film molecules in action in real time with visible light.
